bio
One of the country's leading portrait photographers, John Derryberry has spent decades traveling the world and capturing striking images of everyone from U.S. Presidential candidates to Japanese puppeteers and Nepalese holy men.
The Dallas-based photographer sold his first portrait at age 15 and later apprenticed with master photographers while simultaneously studying Fine Arts and Anthropology at Southern Methodist University. After graduation, John moved to Japan, received a black belt in Kendo, and developed his artist’s eye on photographic journeys across Asia, Europe and Central America.
Settling in Dallas, he opened John Derryberry Photography and became known for arresting images which have appeared in magazines, museums and art galleries around the world. Blurring the line between fine art and commercial photography, John has worked with many well-known commercial and editorial clients while specializing in commissioned family portraiture.
In the studio, John and his staff combine cutting-edge technology with classical techniques to produce the highest-quality prints. This blend of arresting photography and masterful printmaking is what makes his pictures so compelling.
“A great portrait is iconic,” John says. “It captures the spirit of who you are and defines the way you will be remembered.”
